The bar chart illustrates the number of American people who married and divorced over 30-year period from 1970, with another bar chart providing the percentages of those marital statuses. As can be seen, American citizens got married more than having annulled a marriage.
It is noticeable that there was a steady fall of marriages from 2.5 million to 2 million between 1980 and 2000. Nevertheless, divorces increased over the first decade and then slightly decreased ending in 2000 at approximately 1 million. Moreover, for each decade, the figure of marriages around double that of divorces.
In the two of the years, there were two marital-status trends of the Americans; upward and downward. As regards to the former, the proportion of divorced people rose approximately threefold from 1990 to 2000. Likewise, the trend for the never married people was upward. By contrast, the proportions of the married and widowed are marginally dropped by around 10% and 2% respectively.
Overall, the primary status of people in the US was marriage living as couples bound by marriage.
