Main Idea คืออะไร?
Main Idea คือ ใจความสำคัญหรือใจความหลักของเรื่อง ซึ่งเป็นส่วนสำคัญที่สุดของเรื่อง ซึ่งเป็นส่วนที่ครอบคลุมและควบคุมเรื่องนั้นๆ กล่าวคือ ในแต่ละย่อหน้าต้องมี main idea เพียงอันเดียว และถ้าเมื่อขาด
main idea ไปแล้ว จะทำให้ไม่เกิดเนื้อเรื่องต่างๆ ขึ้น หรือทำให้ไม่ทราบจุดประสงค์เรื่องนั้นๆ แล้วทำให้เกิดความเข้าใจคลาดเคลื่อนได้
โดยปกติแล้ว main idea จะเป็นประโยคเท่านั้น การวิเคราะห์และค้นหา main idea ได้ ต้องเกิดจากการค้นหา Topic มาก่อน และนำเอาส่วน topic มารวมกับข้อความ ที่ควบคุมสาระเกี่ยวกับ topic นั้น กล่าวโดยสรุป คือ
1) พินิจพิเคราะห์และหา topic หรือเนื้อเรื่องที่อ่าน ว่าด้วยเรื่องอะไร (What is the topic idea?)
2) ส่วนที่ควบคุมประเด็นสาระที่เสนออยู่นั้นคืออะไร นั่นคือถูกควบคุมให้พูดถึงสิ่งใด แล้วนำเอา topic + สิ่งที่ควบคุม (controlling idea) ก็จะได้เป็น main idea
จึงเห็นได้ว่า main idea ที่ถูกต้อง จะต้องครอบคลุมสิ่งที่กล่าวในเรื่องได้โดยเฉพาะประเด็นหลัก
Main Idea & Topic sentence
Main Idea & Topic sentence มีความคล้ายคลึงกันมาก
Topic Sentence หมายถึง ประโยคที่บรรจุหัวเรื่องและใจความสำคัญไว้ ส่วนใหญ่มักวางไว้ที่ประโยคแรก หรือประโยคสุดท้ายของข้อความ ซึงมักหาได้จากเนื้อเรื่อง
Main Idea มี 2 ชนิด
1. State main idea คือ หลักใหญ่ใจความที่สำคัญที่สุดของเรื่อง ซึ่งผู้เขียนบอกมาตรงๆ สามารถครอบคลุมเนื้อหาของเรื่องได้ทั้งหมด จะต้องตั้ง main idea ไว้ในการเขียน และบรรยายหรือธิบายโดยยึด main idea เป็นหลัก ส่วนที่ขยายหรือบรรยายให้รายละเอียดต่อจาก main idea คือ supporting idea โดยปกติ ในเนื้อความหนึ่งๆ เรามักจะพบ state main idea ได้ในตอนต้น ตอนกลาง หรือตอนท้ายของย่อหน้า
2. Implied main idea หมายถึง การกล่าวถึง main idea ในลักษณะที่ผู้เขียนไม่ได้เอ่ยมาตรงๆ ทันที เพียงแต่แสดงนัยให้เห็นเท่านั้น ผู้อ่านต้องวินิจฉัยเอาเองเพื่อให้เห็นได้ชัด
ตำแหน่งของ Main Idea อยู่ตรงไหนบ้าง
| 1. อยู่ตรงต้นเรื่อง | Women have been skilled in the use of beauty aids. Cleoptara painted her eyebrows and lashes black just as women do today. She painted her upper lids blue-black and the lower ones green. Cleopatra was alo familiar with cold cream, the oldest cosmetic knwn to history. |
| 2. อยู่ท้ายเรื่อง | Most of the windows are broken, and the ones that were not broken were very dirty. Cracks in the walls were both wide and deep; the outside concrete of the building kept breaking away. The plumbing had long been ruined by vandals. And electric wiring had been pulled out. The building simply was not fit to live in. |
| 3. อยู่ตรงกลางเรื่อง | Dark green leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach are good sources of vitamin C. Carrots, squash and sweet potatoes are good sources of caretene, which the body changes to Vitamin A. Dark green leafy vegetables also supply us with iron. All vegetables are good for us because they supply us with important vitamins and minerals that build cells and keep us healhty. Vitamin C, for example, helps to build strong teeth and helps us to resist infections. Vitamin A helps us to keep skin healthy and protects our eyes. Iron,also an important part of vegetables, builds red blood cells. Without enough iron, we would suffer from an illness called anemia. |

Fantasy and science fiction are fun to read. The writer so often do just the opposite of what the reader expects. They can make elevators giggle, coffeepots talk, basketballs have mind of their own, and people get coated with palstic. They do their things purposely to make their stories more entertaining. |
| 5. ไม่อยู่ในประโยคใดประโยคหนึ่ง แต่ต้องสรุปเองโดยนัย | The American author jack London was once a pupil at the Cole Grammar School in Oakland, California. Each morning the class sang a song. When the teacher noticed that Jack wouldn’t sing, she sent him to the principal. He returned to class with a note. It siad that he could excuse from singing, but he would have to write an essay every morning. ( main idea : Jack London’s writing skill may be traced to his punishment in Grammar school.) |
ดังที่กล่าวแล้วว่า การหา main idea นั้น จะต้องมีการค้นหา topic ก่อน ดูว่าเรื่องที่อ่านกล่าวถึงคำนามตัวไหนบ่อยที่สุด (topic Noun) แล้วดูว่ามีการกล่าวถึงนามคำนั้นว่าอย่างไร (Topic Idea) แล้วจึงดูว่าข้อความที่เป็นใจความสำคัญของเรื่อง topic idea นั้นอยู่ในประโยคใด ประโยคนั้นแหละเป็น Topic sentence หรือ Main Idea ลองดูตัวอย่างนะคะ

Fifty-five percent of the lefties smoked, whereas fewer than half of the righties smoked. Furthermore, the lefties consumed more alcohol per year than their right-handed counterparts. ข้อควรสังเกตในการหาใจความสำคัญ (Main Idea)
