(CB IELTS 7 – Test 4 -Task2) Some people think that universities should provide graduate with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?
For several centuries, main curriculums in colleges and universities have been developed dramatically to provide necessary knowledge and skills to their students. Some individuals believe that those institutions should open the technicalcourses that are related to their future jobs while others believe that learning knowledge for their own sake such as soft skills, physical courses, and so on is more significant than for their employer in the future. Working knowledge subjects, from where I stand, should be the primary education of academic institutions in this age.
First of all, students should take the classes related to their future jobs because they will be able to apply their needful knowledge and skills when they work. Companies and organizations always ask their new graduate applicants what subjects they tookwhile they were studying in schools or universities because this helps employers to reduce some trainingexpenditure. The more courses the company’s field is related to, the greater opportunity the candidate has to get the job. For instance, after I had graduated in computer engineering, I applied for a developer position. I told an interviewer that I had already taken certain programming courses, and then she hired me as a staff member of her team.
In addition, giving soft skills such as leadership, making a decision, communication skills, and so forth to young people in colleges and schools is not important. Not only are these skills useful to executives, but also children are under a lot of pressurein their studies. In general, leaders train these skills to senior staff when they need to use this knowledge or theyget a promotion. Take the DST, the company I am working at, as a good example. It has provided a lot of soft skills classes to every staff level except the new joiners because all new employees need to learn technical courses for three months before they join their team. After that, if a new worker has good performance because of working hard and then he gets a promotion, his boss will register him to take a few soft skills.
In conclusion, technical knowledge and skills should be the main curriculums in colleges because individuals can apply them in theirworkplace. Moreover, students do not under a lot of pressure to work hard in their learning certain skills for themselves because leaders would provide those courses at the suitable time.
