Telecommuting refers to workers doing their job from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades. How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?
In the modern world, technology, the internet, the mobile phone and fax, have revolutionized employment. Thanks to the aforementioned devices, workers can operate at home and communicate with the office via the innovation called telecommuting. Some people believe that the office could disappear in the future. This essay will discuss effects of this approach.
Telecommuting can save time and money and gives people more freedom. In the past, employees had to travel to work whereas currently, they do not waste time and cost on commuting and can start work early at home. Moreover, telecommuting can connect workers in different settings via various channels like e-mail, online network, and video conferencing, and so on. To illustrate, the secretary in Thailand can send a report by e-mail to a boss’ meeting in Canada. Furthermore, this modern method contributes to a relaxed condition. When working at home, people feel free and comfortable because they can manage schedules, processes and the environment by themselves. Also, it decreases stress and pressure from their boss and colleagues.
However, communication technology affects workers negatively as well. Employees may be introverted as a result of technology. Most of them use electronic devices instead of direct interaction. This way lessens face-to-face contact and workers hardly meet other co-workers; as a consequence, they lack the skill to cooperate.
All in all, a virtual office brings about conveniences and cuts down on the expenses whereas it makes workers isolated. Although I am convinced that this work pattern is effective, it cannot completely replace the former. one. Nevertheless, many offices try to set telecommuting as an alternative to respond to the modern lifestyle of employees.
